PROGRAMS

The Department of Mathematics, National Institute of Technology Silchar, offers a postgraduate program (M.Sc.) and Ph.D. programs in Mathematics. In addition, the Department offers a range of undergraduate, postgraduate, and Ph.D. level courses for students in various engineering and other academic programs at NIT Silchar.

POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMME (M. Sc.)

The M.Sc. program in Mathematics is designed to provide students with advanced knowledge and a strong foundation in various areas of Mathematics. The program is structured to enable students to complete the degree solely through advanced coursework. However, students also have the option of pursuing an in-depth study of a specific problem or topic by replacing certain courses with equivalent project work.

The M.Sc. program is a two-year, four-semester program comprising theoretical coursework, computational activities, and project and dissertation work. The project and dissertation work is undertaken during the final semester and typically involves a substantial research component, providing students with an opportunity to develop their analytical, computational, and research skills.

DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (Ph. D.)

The Ph.D. program in Mathematics is a research-oriented postgraduate program focused on original and significant contributions to the field of Mathematics. The program is designed to develop scholars capable of conducting independent research and contributing to the advancement of mathematical knowledge through high-quality publications in reputed journals and conferences.

In the initial stage of the program, Ph.D. scholars are required to complete prescribed coursework, with specific requirements varying by academic background and research area. Upon completion of the coursework, scholars primarily focus on their research under the guidance of their supervisors.

The program also provides Ph.D. scholars with opportunities to develop their teaching skills through tutorials and academic activities associated with undergraduate courses. Through rigorous coursework and sustained research, scholars develop advanced knowledge, analytical abilities, and expertise in their chosen area of Mathematics, preparing them for careers in academia, research, and other fields requiring advanced mathematical expertise.
